• Power & Wi-Fi: Electricity outages and fluctuating Wi-Fi are a reality. Invest in a local SIM card and a WiFi hotspot device for backup data and research cafes with a strong WiFi network. Make sure you also invest in a heavy-duty power bank that can charge your devices and laptop. zz

• On-the-Go Work: Working from your laptop in transit isn’t always ideal. Traffic in cities like Lagos and Nairobi can be intense, and the noise can be distracting, so plan your day to minimize travel during peak hours.

Here’s my formula for a successful remote work experience abroad:

• Work Hard, Play Hard: Dedicate your weekdays to work but sprinkle in small adventures outside your working hours. I took a candle-making class, visited an upside-down house, even grabbed breakfast with friends–all before clocking in for the day.

• Meeting Optimization: Set certain days and hours as your core meeting slots. This allows you to knock out your individual contributor work outside your traditional work hours and saves some of your evenings for socializing.

• Save the Vacation for Last: Plan your official "vacation" days at the end of your work stint. This gives you time to fully unwind and immerse yourself in the destination without the pressure of looming deadlines.
